Add colon and a number for an exact word length. Asterisk before the colon searches any letters and requires a length, for example *:2 / q*. Use up to 2 rack question-mark wildcards. After the slash, question mark matches one letter and up to 3 stars match any number of letters.

Rack syntax guide

How to use the Words With Friends solver

  1. Choose a dictionary: select Standard for 172,000+ focused ENABLE public-domain entries, Expanded for 854,000+ Wiktionary-derived entries, or Both for 867,000+ unique entries after duplicates are removed. Hover over or focus the selector to confirm the active choice.
  2. Enter rack letters and a pattern: type repeated tiles exactly as they appear. Use ? for a wildcard rack tile and add an optional pattern after /. In the pattern, ? matches one letter and * matches any number of letters, including zero. To generate a complete word list, use *:length; for example, *:2 / q* finds every two-letter word beginning with Q in the selected dictionary. Add +letters to require letters or -letters to exclude them, such as *:7 +ING-QXZ. Open the Rack syntax guide question-mark button for runnable examples that fill the query and start the search automatically.
  3. Arrange the rack: drag rack tiles into your preferred order, use Alt with the Left or Right Arrow key, or select the rack-sort menu. Tiles resize with the available space so compact queries remain on one line.
  4. Set the main word filters: open Basic Filters, then use Word Length, Starts With, Ends With, Must Include Letters, and Exclude Letters to describe the match.
  5. Refine the results: open Advanced Filters to require J, Q, X, or Z; set minimum vowels, minimum consonants, and a score range; or select Any Word, No Hook, S, Front, Back, or Multi from the Hooks filter.
  6. Choose a sorting method: use the compact Sort Results menu for score, length, or alphabetical order. Select More options… for grouped Strategic and Hook sorts. Choosing an option automatically reruns the current search.
  7. Unscramble the letters: select Unscramble beside the smart input, or press Ctrl+Enter. On a Mac, use Command+Enter.
  8. Inspect a word: hover over, focus, or select a result word to open its Word Details window. Click a word to keep it open; use Close or Escape to dismiss. It shows dictionary-source badges, remaining rack tiles, estimated leave quality, vowel-to-consonant ratio, available leave words, and a local definition. Expand Available hooks to load hooks. Use the spyglass for external dictionaries.
  9. Analyze the matches: when results exist, expand Word Breakdown beneath the word list or press Ctrl+B to jump to it.
  10. Save candidate words: select Pick on a result to add it to the private Pick List, where you can compare scores, add notes, or insert it back into the rack. Select 2–4 picks and choose Compare selected for a side-by-side comparison.
  11. Play and refill: select Play in Word Details or the Pick List. Enter replacement tiles and choose Add tiles & search, or search the remaining rack. Undo play restores your original search. Playing clears board and search filters for the next turn.
  12. Reuse a recent search: open History to restore a rack, pattern, filters, and sorting method. On desktop, press Down Arrow in the rack input for a compact recent-search list.

Letter frequency still matters in normal rack searches: a result cannot use any letter more often than it appears in your input. Add :length for an exact length; digits are accepted only after the colon. A single * before the colon removes the rack restriction and requires an exact length. Broad searches show the exact match total while displaying 250 results per page to keep the page responsive. Length sorting replaces paging controls with Jump bars above and below the results; select a gold page bubble or word-length shortcut to navigate, and expand or collapse length groups. Other sorts retain paging controls above and below the word list. The selected ENABLE and/or EXPANDED word data is compressed and loaded in small chunks only when a search needs them.

Press Ctrl+I, or Command+I on a Mac, to jump back to the rack input from anywhere on the page.

Clear search clears the rack, board pattern, filters, and results. History, Pick List, dictionary, result sort, and tile-color theme are preserved. Delete saved searches or words separately in their own panels. Your browser refresh shortcut remains available.

Reuse recent searches with private search history

Every successful word search is saved locally with its rack, optional pattern, active filters, sorting method, result count, entropy, and estimated leave value. Select Re-run to restore the same search settings and run the word finder again. Pin useful searches, sort the list by date or rack, show only pinned entries, or delete individual searches.

The Words With Friends solver keeps up to 50 unpinned recent searches. Pinned searches stay until you remove them. History is stored only in this browser and is never uploaded; use Clear all history whenever you want to remove the complete list.

Build a Words With Friends Pick List and compare words

Select Pick beside any result to save that word for closer comparison. The Pick List shows its word length, base Words With Friends score, tile rack, and gameplay flags for hook potential, rack balance, high-value letters, and anagram count. Add a private note to remember a board position or planned play, then sort saved words by score, hook potential, length, or tile-value density.

Use Insert to place a saved word back in the rack input, or press Alt+L to toggle the Pick List from the keyboard. Saved words and notes remain only in this browser until you remove them or clear the Pick List. Clear search preserves your saved words.

Free anagram solver and Words With Friends word finder

Use this word finder to solve an anagram, explore possible words from a letter rack, or check a difficult board position. Length sorting keeps words grouped from longest to shortest or shortest to longest; gameplay sorts create one global ranking so the strongest matching play appears first.

Compare candidates and prepare your next rack

Select 2–4 words in your Pick List, then choose Compare selected. The comparison uses each word's saved rack and board context, with tile scores, tiles used, remaining letters and blanks, a leave estimate, hooks in your selected dictionary, and ENABLE or Expanded membership. Older picks without a saved rack show only the available information.

Choose Play to remove only the tiles spent from the current rack. Add up to that many replacement tiles, using ? for a blank, or keep the remaining rack. Undo play returns to your original search, including board letters and filters. History and saved picks stay available.

Sort Words With Friends rack letters and solve offline

Select the rack-sort icon between the letter input and Unscramble to rearrange tiles without changing the letters in your rack or an optional pattern after /. Common layouts place vowels first, alphabetize tiles, separate blanks, or move S to the far right. Strategic layouts cluster duplicates, keep common digraphs near each other, separate J, Q, X, and Z, follow English letter frequency, or organize letters around RETINA, SATINE, TISANE, SENIOR, and LATRINE stems. Open the Tile Color tab to choose Classic Scrabble Wood, Modern Minimalist, Color-Coded by Value, Dark Mode, Tournament, or Playful Puzzle tiles. The theme is saved in this browser.

Enable Offline Mode downloads the WWF solver and all Standard, Expanded, and combined dictionary options, scoring engine, hook data, and local WordNet definitions to this browser. After the download, searches and definition lookups work without an internet connection. External dictionary links and related web guides remain unavailable until Offline Mode is disabled.

Find the highest-scoring Words With Friends words

Select Score: highest first in the compact Sort Results menu to compare every match in one score-ranked list instead of scanning separate length groups. Changing the sort automatically reruns the current search. Scores use standard English tile values with rack blanks worth zero, before premium squares and cross-word scores.

The high-value filter and sort prioritize words containing J, Q, X, or Z. Plays using seven rack tiles carry a Bingo +35 candidate badge, and the bingo sort moves those rack-clearing plays to the top.

Filter words for a rack or board position

Enable Play through board letters and enter the letters already on the board, using ? for each space you will fill. Rack CT with board pattern ?A? finds CAT without spending an A tile. Use fixed letters and question marks only in this mode. The solver checks the word against the selected list; premium squares, cross-words, and full board legality still depend on your game.

Open Basic Filters and use Starts With and Ends With for known edge letters. In Your rack, place the rack before / and an optional pattern after it. For example, ABCDE?? / A*E searches the supplied rack for words beginning with A and ending with E, with any number of letters between.

Use Exclude Letters to remove words containing unwanted tiles. Advanced Filters can require at least one high-value tile, set minimum vowel or consonant counts, and constrain the base tile score. Clear search clears the rack and filters while preserving History, Pick List, and your dictionary choice.

Understand your rack with Word Breakdown charts

Word Breakdown appears directly below the result list after a successful search. Expand it to compare the rack's vowel-to-consonant ratio, tile value distribution, and entropy; review a word-pattern heatmap; and see the matching word-length and score distributions. The charts are generated only while the panel is open.

The final row estimates board fit, premium-square opportunities, leave value, and bingo potential. These figures are directional rather than exact because the tool does not receive a board grid or current tile-bag state.

Find front hooks, back hooks, and S-hooks

A front hook adds one letter before a word to create another valid word; a back hook adds one after it. An S-hook is the common back-hook case where adding S makes a valid word. The Hooks filter can find S-hooks, front hooks, back hooks, multiple hooks, or any hookable word.

Select No Hook to find words that cannot be extended by one letter at either the front or back in the selected dictionary.

Open a result's Word Details, then expand Available hooks to load complete front and back hook words. Each hook is shown with its base Words With Friends score, such as PANE (+8). Expanding Available hooks or comparing picked words loads the complete selected dictionary index for hook lookup.

Hook detection respects the selected Standard, Expanded, or combined dictionary. Because a front hook may begin with any letter, hook filtering and sorting load the complete selected index on demand; ordinary unscramble searches continue loading only relevant chunks.

How are matching words found?

Each dictionary word is reduced to a canonical signature by sorting its letters. The tool groups those signatures by word length, then checks which groups can be built from your available letters.

Compatible words are checked against every active constraint and then ordered by the selected sorting method. All matching and filtering happens locally in the browser.

Dictionary sources and usage notes

Standard uses 172,000+ entries from ENABLE, a public-domain North American word list. Expanded uses 854,000+ Wiktionary-derived entries. Both removes overlap and searches 867,000+ unique entries. These lists may include uncommon, historical, regional, specialist, offensive, or general-dictionary-absent terms. A result is not a guarantee of acceptance by every edition, region, tournament, or ruleset.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What words can I make with these letters?

Enter your letters and select Unscramble. The tool returns every matching word it can build without using any letter too many times. Results use your selected dictionary, filters, and sorting method.

  • Does the Words With Friends Solver have to use every letter?

Not necessarily. Results may use some or all of your letters. Repeated letters can only be used as many times as they appear in your input.

  • Can I use this as a Words With Friends word finder?

The tool can help with word-game searches, and every result includes its standard English tile score. It is not an official game dictionary, and word acceptance can vary by dictionary, edition, region, and ruleset. Rack blanks score zero; board multipliers and cross-word scores are not included; plays using seven rack tiles receive a separate Bingo +35 candidate badge.

  • Which dictionary does the Words With Friends Solver use?

Choose Standard for 172,000+ focused ENABLE entries, Expanded for 854,000+ Wiktionary-derived entries, or Both for 867,000+ unique entries. These word lists may contain uncommon, historical, regional, offensive, or general-dictionary-absent terms.

  • Is this an official Words With Friends dictionary?

No. MonkeyTactics is an independent utility and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Zynga or Take-Two Interactive. WORDS WITH FRIENDS and related marks belong to their respective owners.

  • How are Words With Friends scores calculated?

The displayed score adds the standard English tile value of each letter in the word, with rack blanks worth zero. Fixed board letters use their normal tile values. It does not include premium squares, word multipliers, or cross-words. Plays using seven rack tiles receive a separate Bingo +35 candidate badge. Available Hooks also shows the base score beside each complete hook word.

  • Can I play through letters already on the board?

Yes. Enable Play through board letters, enter your rack, and enter the board pattern with fixed letters and ? spaces. Rack CT and board ?A? can form CAT using the A already on the board. Only the question-mark spaces consume rack tiles. Stars are not supported in board mode. Scores include the normal values of fixed board letters and zero for rack blanks, before premium squares and cross-words.

  • How does the smart letter and pattern input work?

Enter rack letters before / and an optional positional pattern after it. Question marks before the slash are wildcard rack tiles. After the slash, ? matches exactly one letter and * matches any number of letters, including zero. For example, ABCDE?? / A*E finds rack-buildable words beginning with A and ending with E. Add :length before the slash to set an exact length. Use a single unrestricted rack star, such as *:2 / Q*, to list every two-letter word beginning with Q. Append +letters to require letters or -letters to exclude them; for example, *:7 +ING-QXZ. The Rack syntax guide provides runnable examples that apply the query and start the search automatically.

  • How do I generate a complete Words With Friends word list?

Enter *:length to remove the rack restriction, then optionally add a pattern, required letters, or excluded letters. For example, *:7 / *ING finds seven-letter words ending in ING. Large searches show the exact match total and 250 results per page, with paging controls above and below the word groups.

  • How do I find the highest-scoring Words With Friends word?

Choose Score: highest first in the Sort Results menu beside the results. The tool automatically reruns the current search and ranks matches globally by base tile score, with the highest-scoring word first.

  • What are front hooks, back hooks, and S-hooks?

A hook adds one letter before or after a word to create another valid word in the selected dictionary. An S-hook specifically adds S to the end. Use the Hooks pills to find S, Front, Back, Multi, or No Hook results. Open a result's lookup window to see complete hook words and their base Words With Friends scores.

  • What sorting options are available?

The Sort Results menu beside the results includes score, longest-first, shortest-first, and alphabetical sorting. Select More options… to open grouped Basic, Strategic, and Hook sorts for rack use, high-value letters, bingos, patterns, and hook utility. Length sorts add Jump bars above and below results with selectable gold page bubbles, word-length shortcuts, collapsible groups, and Collapse All.

  • How do I look up definitions and hooks for a result word?

Hover over, focus, or select a result word to open Word Details. It shows the rack leave, estimated leave quality, vowel-to-consonant ratio, available leave words, local WordNet definition, and dictionary-source badges. Click a word to keep details open; use Close or Escape to dismiss. Expand Available hooks to load scored hooks. Select the spyglass for external dictionaries.

  • What does Word Breakdown show?

After a search returns results, expand Word Breakdown beneath the word list to see vowel and consonant balance, tile value distribution, rack entropy, a word-pattern heatmap, and word-length and score distributions. It also includes estimated board-fit, premium-square, leave-value, and bingo figures. The charts are created only while the panel is expanded.

  • Are the Word Breakdown gameplay figures exact?

Rack and result summaries are calculated from your entered letters and matching words. Board-fit, premium-square, leave-value, and bingo figures are estimates because no board grid or tile-bag state is provided.

  • Does the Words With Friends Solver have keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Press Ctrl+I, or Command+I on a Mac, to focus the rack input instantly. Press Ctrl+Enter, or Command+Enter on a Mac, to unscramble the current input. After results appear, press Ctrl+B, or Command+B on a Mac, to expand and jump to Word Breakdown. Press Ctrl+H, or Command+Shift+H on a Mac, to open History. When the Rack Options control is focused, Down opens it; Up and Down navigate; Left closes it and returns to the rack; Right closes it and focuses Unscramble.

  • How does recent search history work?

Each successful search saves its rack, pattern, filters, sorting method, result count, and gameplay metrics in this browser. Open History to rerun, pin, sort, or delete searches. The tool keeps up to 50 unpinned searches, while pinned searches remain until you delete them.

  • What is the Words With Friends Solver Pick List?

The Pick List saves words you want to compare or reuse. Each saved word can include a note and displays its tile score, length, rack tiles, and gameplay flags. Pick List data stays in local browser storage until you remove it in the Pick List. Clear search preserves your saved words.

  • What does Clear search clear?

Clear search clears the rack, board pattern, filters, and results. It preserves History, Pick List, dictionary, sorting selections, and tile-color theme. Delete saved work separately using the History or Pick List controls.

  • How can I sort the letters on my Words With Friends rack?

Select the rack-sort icon between the input and Unscramble. Choose a common vowel, alphabet, blank, or S layout; cluster duplicates and digraphs; separate power tiles; use letter-frequency order; or follow a named anagram stem. Sorting changes only the rack and preserves an optional pattern after /. The Tile Color tab provides six saved visual themes, including value-coded tiles.

  • Can I use the Words With Friends Solver offline?

Yes. Select Enable Offline Mode to download the solver, ENABLE and EXPANDED lists, scoring engine, hook data, and local WordNet definitions. Searches then work without an internet connection. External dictionaries and related web guides are hidden until you disable Offline Mode.

  • Does the Words With Friends Solver have a Focus Mode?

Yes. Select the expand icon in the solver's upper-right corner to open a distraction-free workspace. The 01 / Solve setup collapses automatically and can be reopened with its gold chevron. Rack options, filters, results, History, Pick List, hooks, and definitions remain available.

  • Are my searches private?

Yes. The dictionary and unscrambling logic run entirely in your browser. History and Pick List data stay only in this browser's local storage and are never uploaded. You can remove individual entries, clear either list, or approve the History or Pick List deletion controls at any time.
