Private, local bill planning
Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter
Calculate tips using local customs, account for sales tax, split the bill across any group, and round the final amount—all instantly in your browser.
How to use the Tip Calculator
Enter the bill amount shown on your check, its tax rate, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people splitting the bill. The calculator derives the pre-tax subtotal automatically. Choose Pre-tax or Post-tax to control which amount the tip uses.
Your results update automatically as you change any option, showing how much each person pays, the grand total including tip, and the tip amount on its own. The breakdown bar shows how much of the total is the bill versus the tip. Smart Adjustments can round the tip, total, or per-person amount up or down to a whole currency unit; when several are selected, they are applied from top to bottom.
Select Copy bookmarkable link to save or share the calculator with your current settings. The link preserves your bill, split, tip percentage, local sales tax rate, pre-tax or post-tax tip basis, and Smart Adjustment rounding preferences, so you can return to the same setup without entering everything again.
How is a tip calculated?
A tip is the selected pre-tax or post-tax base multiplied by the tip percentage:
Tip = Selected tip base × ( Tip% ÷ 100 ) · Total = Bill + Tip · Per Person = Total ÷ People
For example, an $85.50 bill with 8% tax has a pre-tax subtotal of $79.17. An 18% pre-tax tip is $14.25, for a total of $99.75. Choosing post-tax instead produces a $15.39 tip.
For a quick mental shortcut: 10% is just the bill with the decimal shifted one place left, 20% is double that, and 15% is 10% plus half of 10%.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the United States, the customary tip at a sit‑down restaurant is 15–20% of the pre‑tax bill, with 20–25% common for excellent service. For counter service or takeout, 10% or a small flat amount is typical.
Tipping customs vary significantly around the world — many European and Asian countries include a service charge in the bill, and some cultures (like Japan) do not tip at all.
To make this easier, the calculator includes a Country / Region Tipping Customs dropdown that displays the typical restaurant tipping practice for each location. Select a country to see its standard tipping norms before choosing your tip percentage.
-
How do I calculate a tip by hand?
To calculate a 20% tip quickly: move the decimal point one place to the left (that's 10%), then double it. For a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.00. For 15%, find 10% and add half of it: $4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75.
-
What if the split doesn't divide evenly?
The calculator rounds each amount to the cent. In practice, one person may pay a few cents more or less to cover rounding. Use Smart Adjustments to round each person's share up or down to a whole currency unit and automatically update the total and tip.
-
Should I tip before or after tax?
The most common practice is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax isn't part of the service you received. Some people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Enter your tax rate and use the Pre-tax / Post-tax control to choose either method.
-
When should I tip more or less?
Large groups often trigger an automatic 18–20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more — check your bill first. At a buffet, 10% is generally enough since you serve yourself. For delivery, 15–20% with a $3–$5 minimum is standard.
