Plan cuts, boxes, and waste

Tile Calculator

How much tile do you need? Plan floors, walls, and backsplashes, compare your carton coverage with tile dimensions, and budget for boxes, adhesive, grout, and supplies.

Build your tile project

Measure surfaces, enter your product details, and turn the estimate into a shopping list.

Floor surfaces share one tile product; wall and backsplash surfaces share another. Use separate projects for additional products. Switching units converts existing surface measurements.

Surfaces to tile

Your tile products

Use actual carton details when available. Carton coverage and supply coverage always use square feet, even when surface measurements use meters. Tile dimensions can use inches or millimeters.

Adhesive, grout & other supplies

Enable the items you need. Package coverage varies with product, tile, grout joints, trowel, and substrate: replace example coverage with label guidance for your installation, or enter quantities manually. Supplies use net tiled area with their own allowance, independently of tile cutting waste.

How to calculate tile for floors and walls

  1. Measure each surface. Enter length and width for floors, or length and height for walls. Add separate rectangles for irregular spaces and deduct untiled areas.
  2. Assign the tile product. Choose floor or wall tile for each surface. Enter an allowance for cutting waste and spare stock per surface.
  3. Check the carton. Enter tile dimensions, tiles or sheets per box, price, and tile contents weight. If the label gives coverage per box, select that method and enter it directly.
  4. Budget for installation supplies. Include adhesive, grout, underlayment, spacers, sealer, trim, or tools. Use package coverage for automatic quantities or enter quantities yourself.
  5. Review the order. Check full boxes, extra pieces, coverage, costs, and tax. Export CSV or print the shopping list.

The calculator supports up to 50 surfaces. All floor surfaces are combined before rounding floor tile to boxes; all wall surfaces are combined separately. Use another project for a second floor tile or wall tile product. Prices start at zero so you can enter your own USD prices.

Tile quantity, carton coverage, and cost formulas

Net area = length × width − excluded area
Order area = net area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Tile area (ft²) = tile length (in) × tile width (in) ÷ 144
Calculated carton coverage = tile area × pieces per box
Boxes = round up(combined order area ÷ carton coverage)
Tile cost = full boxes × price per box

When you enter carton-label coverage, it overrides the coverage calculated from dimensions. Piece estimates then use label coverage divided by pieces per box. For mosaics, enter sheet dimensions and sheets per box. For irregular tiles, use manufacturer carton coverage instead of a rectangular dimension estimate.

Grout joints are not added to tile dimensions, and this tool does not simulate cut layouts. Surplus coverage is purchased coverage beyond your entered allowance, while extra pieces are those from rounding the estimated piece count to full boxes. Neither is a guarantee of reusable offcuts.

Coverage-based supplies use net area for the chosen surface group, their own allowance, and label coverage per package. Sales tax applies to tile and enabled supplies. Labor, delivery, disposal, and unentered materials are excluded.

Example: tile for a 12 × 10 foot floor

A 12-by-10-foot floor has 120 square feet of area. With a 10% allowance, plan for 132 square feet. A 12-by-12-inch tile covers one square foot; a box containing 15 tiles covers 15 square feet.

Boxes = round up(132 ÷ 15) = 9
Purchased pieces = 9 × 15 = 135 tiles
Coverage beyond allowance = 135 − 132 = 3 ft²

At an illustrative $45 per box, the tile subtotal is $405, before supplies and tax. Your product's carton coverage, tile size, package count, price, and layout may differ. The calculator uses unrounded values for purchasing.

Tile calculator FAQs

  • How much extra tile should I buy?

The starting allowance is 10%, an editable planning assumption. Diagonal or patterned layouts, many cuts, fragile material, and spare stock may need a different allowance. Confirm it against your layout and supplier recommendations; the tool does not optimize individual cuts.

  • Can I use custom tile sizes and box coverage?

Yes. Enter dimensions in inches or millimeters and pieces per box, or use the carton-label coverage directly. Example sizes populate illustrative counts and weights, which you should replace with actual product data.

  • Can I calculate floor and wall tile together?

Yes. Add surfaces and assign each to floor tile or wall tile. These two product groups are ordered separately. Surfaces in the same group share one product and are combined before boxes are rounded up.

  • Does this estimate adhesive and grout?

Enable these supplies and enter the coverage of your selected package, a supply allowance, and its price. The calculator rounds up to full packages. You can also enter quantities manually. Coverage depends on installation details; this is not a grout-volume or trowel-selection calculator.

  • Are prices and projects saved?

The latest valid project is saved in this browser when local storage is available. Estimates stay on your device. CSV exports and printable summaries include surfaces, orders, supplies, and budget totals. Reset starts a fresh project.

  • What does the weight estimate include?

It multiplies ordered tile boxes by your entered tile contents weight per box and shows pounds and kilograms. It excludes carton packaging, pallets, adhesive, grout, and other supplies. Use actual shipping weights for delivery and load planning.
