Date difference calculator: business days and calendar dates

This free date difference calculator handles more than a basic day count. Use it to find an exact calendar difference, count elapsed calendar days, calculate business days with holiday exclusions, add days to a date, plan project phases and dependencies, or generate an advanced recurring date schedule.

  1. Choose Date Difference, Work Planning, or Recurring Dates.
  2. Enter the dates and select the calculation options that match your situation.
  3. Calculate the result, then copy its bookmarkable link or use the available print and download tools.

Add calendar days or business days to a date

To calculate a future end date, enter a start date and select Calculate beside the End Date or Target End Date field. Enter up to 10,000 days and choose calendar days or business days. Calendar days include every day; business days skip weekends and holidays from the selected US, EU, or custom calendar.

This date-addition feature is useful for payment terms, delivery estimates, filing windows, contract deadlines, project milestones, and any schedule expressed as a number of working days from a known start date.

Choose the right date-difference precision

Exact years, months, and days

Exact mode gives a calendar-aware breakdown instead of treating every month or year as a fixed number of days. It is useful for calculating age, time since an event, contract length, anniversaries, and other spans normally described in years, months, and days.

Total calendar days

Total calendar days measures the elapsed number of days from one date to the other, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. If the dates are entered in reverse order, the calculator still returns the size of the interval and identifies that the end date comes before the start date. A deadline indicator also compares the later date with today and labels it as past, high, medium, or low risk.

Business days

Business-day mode counts eligible workdays and skips Saturdays and Sundays. You can also exclude holidays by selecting the United States or European Union calendar, or by using a custom holiday list. Eligible start and end dates are included in the business-day total.

Hours and minutes

Use the hours/minutes option when a smaller unit is more useful than a calendar breakdown. The result includes total hours, total minutes, and the equivalent total days.

Count working days with weekends and holidays excluded

The business-day calculator evaluates each date in the selected range and keeps only dates that qualify as workdays:

Choose None to skip weekends only. The built-in US calendar includes common federal holidays, while the EU option includes a common set of European public holidays. Holiday observance can vary by country, state, employer, or organization, so use Custom List when an exact local schedule matters.

Custom holidays may be typed directly or imported from a TXT or CSV file. Enter one date per line or separate dates with commas. The tool accepts up to 40 unique dates, requires the YYYY-MM-DD format, rejects impossible calendar dates, and reports duplicates before the calculation runs.

Plan project phases, dependencies, and business-day deadlines

Work Planning mode combines a working-day count with deadline forecasting. Enter a project start date and target end date, choose the appropriate holiday calendar, and add optional buffer days for reviews, approvals, shipping delays, or other schedule risk.

Buffer days are added as business days, so weekends and selected holidays do not consume the buffer. Results show the business-day total, total calendar days, and buffered deadline. The project timeline separates workdays, weekends, holidays, and buffer time.

Project phase calculator

Add phases with individual names, start and end dates, business-day buffers, holiday calendar overrides, and colors. Each phase automatically reports business days, calendar days, weekends, holidays, its buffer-adjusted end date, deadline risk, and available slack.

Phase dependencies and Gantt-style timeline

Dependencies can start one phase after another phase ends, a chosen number of business days later, or on the next business day. The lightweight Gantt-style timeline displays colored phase bars, holiday markers, today, phase buffers, and the overall buffered deadline. Built-in software, marketing, construction, and academic templates provide a quick starting point without requiring an account or project-management backend.

Export and share a phase plan

Download phase metrics as CSV, export an ASCII timeline as TXT, or create an ICS calendar containing one all-day event per phase. Bookmarkable links preserve phase dates, colors, buffers, dependencies, holiday settings, and the risk threshold.

Generate, print, and export recurring dates

Recurring Dates mode can add a fixed interval or follow calendar rules such as every third Thursday, the last business day of each month, or the 15th of each quarter. Generate up to 200 occurrences and optionally skip selected holidays or move weekend dates to the next business day.

The Upcoming Occurrences table includes the sequence number, formatted date, weekday, and number of days from the start. Print a clean copy or download the schedule as CSV for spreadsheet use or as an aligned TXT file for notes and plain-text records. The selected advanced recurrence rule and holiday adjustments are also preserved in a bookmarkable link.

Private calculations and bookmarkable results

Calculations, phase planning, exports, custom holiday validation, and file imports run in your browser; no account or sign-up is required. Copy bookmarkable link creates a URL containing the current configuration so you can save or share a calculation. Because that URL contains the selected settings, review it before sharing dates or a custom holiday list.

Date Difference Calculator FAQs

  • How do I add calendar days or business days to a start date?

Enter a start date and select Calculate beside the end date. Choose the number of days and whether to add calendar days or business days. Business-day calculations skip weekends and holidays from the selected calendar.

  • How do I calculate the exact number of years, months, and days between two dates?

Choose Date Difference, enter the start and end dates, select Exact (years, months, days), and calculate. This calendar-aware result is useful for ages, anniversaries, contracts, and other spans normally described in years, months, and days.

  • What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days include every date in the elapsed span. Business days include eligible weekdays and exclude Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from the selected calendar. Business-day totals include eligible start and end dates.

  • Are the start and end dates included?

Exact, total-day, hour, and minute results measure elapsed time between the dates. Business Day and Work Planning modes count both the start and end dates when they are eligible workdays. Fixed recurring intervals begin on the start date unless an enabled holiday or weekend adjustment changes it. Advanced rules begin with the first matching date on or after the start date.

  • Can I exclude holidays or upload a custom holiday list?

Yes. Select the United States or European Union calendar, choose None to skip weekends only, or use Custom List. You can type dates or import a TXT or CSV file containing up to 40 unique, valid dates in YYYY-MM-DD format.

  • What does Work Planning mode calculate?

Work Planning calculates project and phase-level business days, calendar days, weekends, holidays, buffered deadlines, risk, and slack. Phases can use dependencies, calendar overrides, colors, templates, a Gantt-style timeline, and local CSV, TXT, or ICS exports.

  • Can I create recurring dates such as every third Thursday or the last business day of the month?

Yes. Recurring Dates supports fixed day intervals, every third Thursday, the last business day of each month, and the 15th of each quarter. Dates can skip holidays or shift from weekends to the next business day.

  • Can I export or share a project phase plan?

Yes. Export phases as CSV, an ASCII timeline as TXT, or phase events as an ICS calendar file. Bookmarkable links can include phase dates, colors, buffers, dependencies, holiday settings, and risk thresholds.

  • Can I print or download recurring dates?

Yes. Generate the recurring schedule, then print the Upcoming Occurrences table or download it as CSV or aligned plain text. Each export includes the occurrence number, ISO date, weekday, and days from the start.

  • Are my dates private, and can I share a calculation?

Calculations and file imports are processed in your browser. The calculator does not require an account. If you use Copy bookmarkable link, the current settings are placed in the URL so you can save or share that configuration. See our Privacy Policy for details.
